MARCH 23, 2 Peter 2:9
6 year old Debbie and her mother were preparing for bed one night. Debbie was afraid of the dark, and although she was usually alright when her mum was with her, she still felt frightened that night. Perhaps it was because the wind was howling, and trees were swaying.
When mum turned off the light, Debbie caught a glimpse of the moon outside the window. “Mum,” she asked, “is the moon God’s light?” “Yes,” said mum. The next question was, “Will God put out His light and go to sleep?” Mum replied, “No, darling Debbie, God never goes to sleeps. And you know, as long as God is awake, He will watch over you and me!”
Then out of the simplicity of a child’s faith, Debbie said, “Well if God doesn’t sleep and is watching over us, there is no point in us being afraid and not being able to sleep.” With that, she closed her eyes, smiled, and soon fell asleep. Debbie got her doctrine right – as long as God is watching over us, we need not be afraid. Are you afraid at times? Are you fearful of the dark, or of strange noises? Have no fear, God is always near. This verse reminds us that God will always deliver His people from temptations, although the idea here covers trials or difficulties as well.
Thought: God is watching over me!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, remind me that You are watching over me, and that You are powerful enough to protect me from all harm. I know I can be fearful at times, but Heavenly Father, from today, may I be strong and of good courage. With You by my side, I will be able to sleep well! In Jesus’ name I pray – amen.
