DECEMBER 26, Genesis 22:1-8
Every father loves his children. Abraham was no different, and must have loved Isaac a lot, especially as he waited so long for a child. But today’s scripture text tells us he must have gone through a very tough time of testing as it appears God wanted Abraham to sacrifice his son!
Was God unreasonable? Did God really want Abraham to sacrifice Isaac? No. What God wanted to do was to test Abraham and through the testing, for Abraham to better understand his own faith.
The marvellous thing about this passage is the faith of Abraham.
Although he was severely tested, his faith in God was never shaken. He never complained when God told him he needed to sacrifice his precious son. On the journey to the hill where he was to kill Isaac, Abraham did not show any sign of fear. In fact, when Isaac asked Abraham what offering they were to give God, Abraham was full of confidence in God because he told his son God will provide an offering Himself.
Has there been any case of a dead person coming back to life during or before the time of Abraham? No. But somehow, Abraham had the faith to believe. Such a faith is amazing. Faith can protect us from doubt; faith can shield us from straying from God.
Dear child, may you have the shield of faith mentioned in Ephesians 6:16 – “Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.”
Thought: May my shield of faith be used well!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, grant me the simple faith that continues to trust in You and Your precious Word, for this I pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
